Workshop on
Strategies for Addressing Carbon Constraints in Commercial Aviation

Organized by the Masdar Institute & MIT as part of the World Future Energy Summit 2010: hosted by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and providing a showcase of global initiatives in alternative energy and sustainability.

In a “post-Copenhagen” era, environmental constraints and carbon emission restrictions are likely to have a significant impact on the aviation industry. The critical importance of aviation to any region’s economy makes it essential to identify strategies for addressing these future carbon constraints and potentially turning them into opportunities.

This one-day workshop will provide a forum for learning, critical discussions and exchange of ideas on strategies for addressing carbon constraints given the most recent developments in the environmental regulatory commitments.

Workshop sessions:

• Aviation industry trends
• Aviation emissions and climate change
• Post-Copenhagen carbon emissions regulations in Europe and globally
• Technological and operational options for reducing aviation carbon emissions
• Sustainable aviation as a strategy for future competitiveness

The workshop will involve short interactive lectures by faculty and researchers from the Masdar Institute for Science and Technology (MIST) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) followed by focused discussions among the participants. It will bring together a broad spectrum of industry stakeholders; airlines, airport operators, government regulators, aircraft manufacturers, and relevant non-governmental organizations.
